Legendary tabla player Zakir Hussain, known for revolutionizing Indian classical music, passed away peacefully in San Francisco at the age of 73. He had been battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a rare lung disease, and was in intensive care before his condition worsened.

Born in 1951 to renowned tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain grew up surrounded by music. By the age of seven, he was already performing on stage. Over his six-decade-long career, he mesmerized audiences worldwide with his rhythmic magic, making the tabla not just an accompanying instrument but a star in its own right.

Hussain’s collaborations with legendary artists like sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and English guitarist John McLaughlin helped introduce Indian classical music to global audiences. His Grammy-winning album Planet Drum remains a milestone in world music.

A recipient of India’s prestigious Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan awards, Zakir Hussain received four Grammy Awards, including three earlier this year. Despite his global fame, he remained humble, calling himself a “worshipper of music.”

Tributes have poured in from around the world. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta described him as the man who made the tabla “sexy,” while musician Ricky Kej praised his humility and ability to inspire generations. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called him a “beacon of India’s rich musical heritage.”

Hussain leaves behind his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and daughters Anisa and Isabella. His legacy will resonate through the countless lives he touched—be it through his groundbreaking performances, his mentorship of young musicians, or his boundless love for music.
