Gilgit-Baltistan Named Must-Visit Destinations for 2025

Gilgit-Baltistan is included in CNN’s list of the top 25 must-visit destinations for 2025. CNN highlights Gilgit-Baltistan’s “tantalizing peaks” and its home to five of the 14 “eight-thousander” peaks, including K2, the world’s second-tallest mountain. It is a popular destination for adventure tourism, trekking, and mountaineering.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Pakistan’s breathtaking northern region, has been included in CNN’s list of the top 25 destinations to visit in 2025. Nestled in the Karakoram Mountains, this picturesque area is renowned for its rugged beauty, towering peaks, and adventurous allure. The region is popular for attracting nature lovers and thrill-seekers from around the globe.

CNN Travel described GB as a “challenging yet rewarding destination,” noting its logistical hurdles. Seasonal road closures and unpredictable flight schedules can make access difficult, but the region’s natural charm remains irresistible. “It has more tantalizing peaks than a lemon meringue pie,” CNN wrote. They also highlight its status as home to five of the world’s 14 tallest mountains, known as “eight-thousanders“. Among these is K2, the planet’s second-highest peak, often deemed the most dangerous to climb.

Each year, thousands of climbers, trekkers, and adventurers flock to GB for expeditions, trekking, paragliding, and other outdoor activities. Hikers consider the region’s trails more challenging than the Himalayas, making them an unparalleled hiking experience. However, CNN emphasized that guided tours are essential for safety, as traveling solo in such rugged terrain is not an option.

Despite the challenges, GB has become a hub for adventure tourism. In 2023, over 2,100 international climbers visited the region, scaling peaks like K2, Nanga Parbat, and Broad Peak. That number rose to 2,380 in 2024, reflecting the growing global interest in the area. However, the year also brought tragic losses. Nine mountaineers lost their lives, including climbers from Japan, Russia, Brazil, and Pakistan, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

CNN Travel also mentioned guided tours by reputable operators. For instance, Intrepid’s 10-day “Little Tibet” hiking expedition showcases GB’s stunning landscapes.

Joining destinations like Morocco, Canada’s Vancouver Island, and Turkiye’s Kaçkar Mountains, GB shines as a must-visit for 2025, offering an unforgettable mix of adventure and natural beauty.
