Muhsin Hendricks, widely regarded as the world’s first openly gay imam, was shot and killed near Gqeberha, South Africa, on Saturday. Local police confirmed the attack, stating that Hendricks was in a car when two masked gunmen ambushed the vehicle and opened fire.

Hendricks, known for his advocacy for LGBTQ+ Muslims, founded the Al-Ghurbaah mosque in Cape Town, offering a safe space for marginalized Muslims. He had been a vocal advocate for human rights and had previously spoken about receiving threats. His murder is currently under investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) condemned the killing, calling for a thorough investigation.

“He supported and mentored so many people in South Africa and around the world in their journey to reconcile with their faith, and his life has been a testament to the healing that solidarity across communities can bring in everyone’s lives,” ILGA Executive Director Julia Ehrt said. “Our condolences go out to all who have been touched by his presence in all these years.”

A Little Glimpse Of Imam’s Life

Hendricks publicly came out as gay in 1996, breaking barriers within the Muslim community. He had previously been married and had children before embracing his true identity. His work included theological discussions on Islam and LGBTQ+ rights, challenging traditional views and fostering acceptance.

The Cape Town Ulama Board, an organization of Sunni scholars, condemned the murder while maintaining differing views from Hendricks on LGBTQ+ matters. However, they urged communities to let law enforcement conduct a proper investigation.

Hendricks’ death has sparked global reactions, with activists and religious leaders expressing both grief and admiration for his bravery. His legacy as a trailblazer in faith and LGBTQ+ advocacy will continue to inspire many worldwide.

Authorities have yet to determine a clear motive, but given Hendricks’ history of activism, speculation about a targeted attack remains. The investigation is ongoing, and police are calling for public assistance in identifying the perpetrators.
