The Punjab government has launched an ambitious project to restore and promote 170 historic sites across the province. Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority will ensure international-standard facilities at these locations. Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has approved the establishment of the PTH Authority, which will oversee all tourism-related institutions.
Major Restoration Plans
The list of sites includes 101 gurdwaras, 53 churches, mosques, and other historic landmarks. These places will be transformed into top tourist attractions, preserving Punjab’s rich cultural and religious history.
In a major development, the government has allocated Rs. 240 million to modernize the 131-year-old Lahore Museum, collaborating with UNESCO to preserve Punjab’s 1,000-year-old history.
Additionally, a digital tourism app has been introduced to provide visitors with essential travel information, guidance, and services directly on their mobile phones.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has incorporated this initiative into the Annual Development Program, with restoration work set to begin in June 2025. A phased plan will ensure smooth execution, and tenders will be floated in July.

Key 170 Historic Sites Restoration Projects
Several major projects will be part of this initiative:
- Taxila: Developed into an international “tourist city” with new temples and galleries dedicated to Siddhartha.
- Changa Manga: It will turn into a modern leisure resort similar to Switzerland.
- Bansra Gali: Planned as a tourist village.
- Road and Infrastructure Upgrades: High-quality roads and modern facilities will enhance accessibility.
- Gurdwara Restoration: 46 inactive gurdwaras are on the restoration list for Sikh pilgrims.
The government has enacted the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority Act 2024 to support these projects. It has also developed a comprehensive tourism policy to attract local and international visitors.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that this initiative will boost Punjab’s economic growth and enhance Pakistan’s global image.
She stated, “We will invite the whole world to experience Punjab, showcasing the cultural richness of the land of five rivers. Punjab has witnessed the confluence of various religions, eras, and cultures. Protecting our history, culture, and heritage is a legacy for future generations. Promoting tourism will aid in economic development, and Punjab and Pakistan’s global image will shine in a new light.”
With these efforts, Punjab aims to become a leading tourism hub, inviting visitors from around the world to explore its historical and cultural treasures.
