Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and his wife were murdered on June 28, 1914, by a Serbian-backed terrorist. Europe's leaders took a sequence of political, diplomatic, and military decisions that turned a local struggle in south-east Europe into a worldwide war. This led the world to World War 1.
