Typhoon class Nuclear-powered Submarine
The typhoon class submarine is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine. In Russian, it is called Akula. The Soviet Union and Soviet Navy designed and built this submarine in 1976. This is the largest submarine design ever. The submarine is able to accommodate 160 crew members. This submarine has many features and functionalities which outclass all the other Navy submarines of this time. Initially, the typhoon class submarines were built as a reaction to the USA’s Ohio-class submarines. The Russian navy decommissioned the modernization of the submarine in 2012. Russian Navy said that building or even upgrading a typhoon class submarine would be very costly. This is the reason why many typhoon class submarines are out of commission.
